| How may I help? Are you experiencing any of the following? Struggling to cope. Depression. Burnout. Stress/ Overload. Shame. Anger.
Grief and loss. Bereavement. Guilt. Addictive behaviour. Anxiety. Panic.
Trauma. Problems with communication. Relationship difficulties. Phobia. Sometimes we need someone who can listen to us and enable us to find our way back again, perhaps to show us a better way of dealing with the inevitable challenges that life brings. I aim to empower my clients. I aim to give them the tools so that they can guide themselves to choosing appropriate reactions and how to respond to challenges in a healthy way. My goal is to help them find more peace, serenity and calmness in life. Client evaluations follow - for ethical reasons identities have been withheld to protect anonymity “Noreen has helped me realize that I can look at issues in a new light and not cause myself problems by negative self talk and beliefs. I can analyse issues rationally and react to them in a way that does not make me feel bad any more. I accept myself and realise that I can’t expect life to offer me a smooth trouble-free path all the time, but that I am strong enough to deal with what I encounter and will learn from it.” “Years ago I had a massive panic attack. I thought I was going to die, my heart raced so fast and I couldn’t breathe. It came from nowhere, I wasn’t even feeling nervous! For years I put up with the fear of never knowing when it would happen again. This fear ruined occasions that should have been happy ones. The tears poured down my face as I expected it to happen again at any moment. I didn’t talk about it because people tend to think that all you have to do is ‘pull yourself together’! I tried self-help tapes, meditation and alcohol. Nothing worked. Then I tried Noreen! I went to our first meeting petrified, convinced that she would try and recreate the feelings that I experienced during the attack, rather like making people go up in aero planes who are frightened of flying. I needn’t have worried, we just talked. By the end of ten weekly sessions with her and homework of constantly repeating rational thoughts and beliefs in my head, I was cured. It has not happened again and I know it won’t. I now look forward to situations which once filled me with fear. It has been life changing. I wish I had done it years ago. She is a very clever therapist and I cannot thank her, or recommend her highly enough.” “I had been to see a couple of therapists before meeting Noreen and was left feeling very skeptical. I can only say that meeting Noreen and learning about REBT has changed my life. Accepting myself exactly as I am, has enabled me to become a much more balanced human being, someone who can manage my emotions and who is more accepting of others. Realising that your actions do not define who you are, enables you to change the things you do that you don’t like, and accept other people exactly as they are - fallible! Understanding that it’s not the things that happen to you that upset you, but what you tell yourself about them, enables you to deal with life’s ups and downs much more easily. I am eternally grateful to Noreen for explaining the principles of REBT to me in such a logical way. Being rational is a liberating experience.” “One singular event, which I irrationally magnified, placed me
in a state of extreme anxiety, thenled to me leaving my career and placing
myself in complete social isolation from everyone within my life.Fortwo
and half years I remained in this 'place'. It was debilitating anddepressing. Then
I bit the bullet, faced the fear and decided to seekcognitive therapy.
I had never had therapy before and I was pretty skeptical about it.
But, in less than 3 months, my whole life was turned back around to
one of fulfillment, self-acceptance, inner peaceand back on track with
mycareer. In fact I am now in a far better place than I was before that
first triggering event! For the first time in my life, I came to understand
that it isHOW we view things and events in our lives, that generateour
reactions - often incapacitating reactions. The process of learning
and re-educating my beliefs and valueswasenlightening and felt a truly
empowering experience. The learning process creeps up on you and without
realising it, you suddenly find yourself viewing events in a different
but much more rational way. So my inner beliefs and fearsthat used to
so chronically disturb me? They have no hold over me anymore.CBT and
REBT has turned my life around. And the best bit is...once you have
grasped the fundamentals, you become your own lifelong therapist and
you can take those tools with you in any or every area of your life
and continue to enhance your life with them.” About Noreen Emmans My background is in Personnel and Training. My experience is broad although more recently I have focused my work on counselling, psychotherapy and training. With experience in mental after-care and family assessment environments, I have divided my energies between clinical practice and counsellor training for the last fourteen years. Most of the trainer work has been at Thanet College in Broastairs where I am currently Head of Counselling, but also at South Kent College in Folkestone where I gained experience as Counselling Co-ordinator for a year. Noreen trained under Professor Windy Dryden & was professionally supervised by Michael Neenan, at Goldsmith University College in London, in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy where she achieved an MSc in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy. She had previously graduated with an Honours Degree in Post Compulsory Education and Training at Canterbury Christchurch University. Her approach to therapy is holistic, in that she treats her clients as unique & whole persons, mind, body and spirit. Her practice is flexible & her work is drawn from a diverse range of sources & systems, all of which is underpinned by humanistic traditions. From an humanistic perspective, her approach is hedonistic, since she believes that human beings are very important in the world, that they have the ability to create & direct their own destinies, & that they have the right to continue to exist, & enjoy and fulfill themselves. She brings her life experience and training to establish a therapeutic alliance, focus on the client’s problem and apply the psycho-educational methodology in REBT to provide the clients with tools to help them deal with their problems and reach their own goals. As a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist, Noreen is a BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) Registered Counsellor/Psychotherapist & Trainer & a UKRC Registered Independent Counsellor (United Kingdom Register of Counsellors) She is AREBT Accredited (Association of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) and a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist (United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists).
